Duke Kahanamoku made surfing popular in mainland America in 1912 while in Southern California. Kahanamoku was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming in 1912, 1920, 1924! He was also known as a Hawaiian competition swimmer who was also an actor, lawman, early beach volleyball player and businessman credited with spreading the sport of surfing.
